March 27 at 6:30 in the evening, Sergio
Ramirez Munoz gave a lecture at the University Center here at
CSUMB. The talk was about the philosophies and science of the
Aztec. The lecture was in Spanish and translated to English. I
speak from the viewpoint of someone who has no ancestry from Mexico
but an interest in all cultures and ways of understanding the
world.
The lecture began with some basic information about the recording
of the Aztec philosophies by the European invaders and their misinterpretation
of the sciences as religion. The example was given of the so called
rain god Tlaloc, but when translated, the term means earth liquid.
No godhood was intended yet the Europeans, interpreted what they
saw through their own way of understanding.
